Lately I have been thinking about the syndrome of considering that others have it better than me. This is often a Challenge for me as it encompasses not only the thought that it is easier for others than for me, but also that strings would have been better if I had done/said/Chosen __________ differently. This syndrome is one that seems to affect all of us, but looks differently on different ones of us...
For example, to me Matthew McConaghey/Tommy Lee Jones (fill in with year favorite...) are dreamy. Their carriage and demeanor, etc., seem flawless. However, when they aren't scripted, they are just like any other man in the world! (Of course there are some obvious differences but no need to belabor the point.) I do really appreciate that Troy is, overall, better than average and I still choose him. This is where I should address the fact that women are just alike as well...
One day, recently, I was speaking with a friend about this. It seems there are 3 possibilities to consider. If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, one or both of the following applies:
Somebody is working REALLY hard to keep up the grass
There is a lot of fertilizer there that you don't see. (Yes, and by that I mean POOP!)
Both of the above
So often we are debilitated by the wishes of what might be or could have been! We only see the surface or dream up what we see. There is not an option for the fact that things happen easily for some while for others it is just so difficult. There is always hard work going on in the lives of people. It may seem like there is no work because we are all so different. IE: what looks easy to you is HARD work to me, etc.
I have also been thinking a lot about the Kingdom of Christ. These two may seem separate, but perhaps are not. It seems that we often talk of Heaven in a grass-is-greener fashion. Perhaps it is possible that the Kingdom on Earth was also meant to be a picture of what Heaven might be. The Word teaches not only the path to Heaven but also the ethic of living in the Kingdom while still in our Earth-skin. There is a possibility that this life is actually building up for the Kingdom to Come. Why would Jesus have prayed "your kingdom come, on Earth as it is in Heaven" if He had not meant for us to live as if God is in as much control now as in the future?
Consider this as you go about your day. Blessings from the heart of Christ to your heart as you take this rocky journey for yourself! I’d love to read your feedback…
Great post! Definately things to consider. Also along those lines...we may think that someone else has it easier (and maybe they do in some aspects, but maybe not other aspects) but people are also really good at only letting others see what they want them to see. We dont see the inner struggles with people...we just see their smiling faces.Oh and...the grass may "look" greener on the other side but maybe all you're really seeing (from a distance) are the WEEDS! We all know that the weeds are the ones that stand out green and hearty and choke out the lovely grass.
ReplyDeleteHey! Thanks for the comment! I'll be sure to add you to my links. Oh yeah, ditto on the weeds comment...*is a cynic*
ReplyDeleteGreat post! People have often looked at our marriage and seen how very happy we appear to be, but have no idea how much "poop" we have shoveled and how many tears have watered the grass we are growing.
ReplyDeleteheheyou said 'poop':)
