Fall Season at the Metheny House

One might wonder what a person who is a licensed Counselor might do at home. Surely a person who earned a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy would be civilized and elitist, right?

That is what everyone says who meets me! (Not in a million years) I've wondered when my life ended up this way. We'll get there at the end of this post.

Our Falls tend to consist of Football and Deer Hunting/Processing. So far, Troy has gotten 2 does. We do the processing ourselves and are very thankful for the fact that this ends up being really good and relatively inexpensive way to feed us. Troy works hard at this and enjoys it very much. Sorry if this is gruesome to you. He has had tons of fun getting to take some of our guys hunting. He teaches them about harvesting rather than just shooting the first one you see, management, and stuff like that. He does a better job of explaining it than me, but it will take a long time. You should email him if you are interested in learning more about. He LOVES to talk about this program he (and I) really do believe in.

Here is his new processing area, I guess. He wants to enclose an area out back that will become processing central. My funny redneck man. I love him!

Mercy was quite happy to have yummy fresh meat and bones to chew on. Troy didn't monitor how much he was throwing to her of scrap pieces. She ate it all and then threw it up…on the floor on his side of the bed. At least there was that much justice!

The tools of my part of the trade are pictured below. I am not interested in hunting inasmuch as actually doing the killing. I package the meat and sometimes even cook it! =) In late 1999/early 2000, we made the decision to purchase, for $130, our first Food Saver. This was a hard decision (perhaps was on a credit card we are still paying on, though…) as we had limited funds at this time. We don't use our credit cards anymore, we have learned some things! This was an amazing investment. I can't even begin to count the amount of food we saved with our Food Saver! The old one still works, but it is slow and tired. We still used it to help make bags. We use the crazy out of it in the Summer (for veggies) and Fall. You can even microwave and boil to cook things in the bag. Totally cool for clean up!

My favorite scissors. I hesitated getting them for years and then bought a pair on clearance them when they changed the look. Sweet! They are self-sharpening kitchen shears from Pampered Chef. Score!

Here is the freezer that my parents didn't need any more…thanks so much, mom and dad! All of that on the 3rd and 4th rows are from this year already. This means we have plenty to share later on. That was our hope and goal. We love being able to share with others in this way.

So my previous question was this…how did I get here? I wanted, briefly, to live in a small city and be way different. I even imagine it when I am in Bricktown or watch stuff on TLC or HGTV. I'm happy to be here. I kind of fit. More on that in another blog post…
