I just finished watching the movie Freedom Writers. Man, I haven't cried that much since Jr. college when I would go to sad movies to cry. I would refuse to cry about my own stuff, but I needed to cry really badly. Cry about the fake stuff..makes sense!?
That movie touched me so deeply. I don't pretend to be an expert on inner city workings. However, it seemed to be in line with what I do know. It seemed to be very real.
At one point, the father character said to the teacher that touched the lives of the kids "you have been blessed with a burden, my daughter...I am so jealous." (Ok, so maybe not an exact quote)
Many, if not all, of us are blessed with a burden. When we are faced with the reality of Christ; His purity, His sacrifice, His unwavering love, these COMPEL us to act. To love like He loves, to reach out, to listen to the cries of the lost and hurting...this is only part of our task.
I remember when I first started training for counseling at Harding. I learned how to read people much better than I am naturally bent. I saw the cry of pain in so many eyes that I would almost break out into a sweat every time I went to Wal-Mart.
Our preacher told about a part in the newest Superman movie where Superman talks about hearing the cries of the people. He can't not hear them. God doesn't tell us we must, individually, save all of them. That is why He sent Jesus! However, He compels us to reach, to touch, to experience fully the blessing that is our burden.
May you see clearly the importance of your task and feel deeply the burden of the blessings of Christ. But don't keep them, give 'em back to Jesus! That is the only way we stand.
very well put and thought provoking...thanks for sharing
